The EcoDistricts Protocol is a framework for creating sustainable, resilient, and inclusive neighbourhoods by integrating social, environmental, and economic objectives. It encourages communities to set ambitious equity, resilience, and climate protection goals. The protocol offers a standardised approach that guides the planning, implementation, and monitoring of neighborhood-scale projects, ensuring they deliver tangible benefits across all these dimensions.
At its core, the Protocol is structured around three key imperatives: Equity, Resilience, and Climate Protection. Equity aims to address social disparities and ensure that all community members benefit from development projects. Resilience focuses on building neighborhoods that can adapt to economic, social, and environmental changes, while Climate Protection emphasises reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate-related risks.
The protocol is built on a five-step process: Commit, Assess, Prioritise, Act, and Measure. This process helps neighbourhoods align stakeholders, assess current conditions, set priorities, and create strategies for action. Projects are also continuously monitored to ensure they meet their sustainability goals, driving accountability and long-term success.
Collaboration is at the heart of the EcoDistricts Protocol. It fosters partnerships between governments, developers, community organizations, and residents to ensure that development reflects local needs and aspirations. This collaborative approach helps create neighborhoods that are not only sustainable and resilient but also inclusive and adaptable to future challenges.
In 2023 the ownership and administration of the EcoDistricts Protocol was transferred to Partnership for Southern Equity, an Atlanta (GA) based non-profit who's mission is to advance equitable and prosperous communities. More information can be found at https://justcommunities.info/.
